President Mohammed Shahabuddin resigned today.
“I am suffering from various health complications,” he said when asked about the reason for his resignation.
“I have nothing more to add at this moment,” Shahabuddin told The Daily Star.
Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad accepted the resignation letter at 5:01 pm today, at the parliament, said the President’s Press Secretary Md Sarwar Alam.
The resignation comes amid media reports that Shahabuddin spoke on the phone with ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina during a visit to London for medical treatment in May this year, according to sources.
Shahabuddin travelled to London on May 9 and returned on May 18.
Hasina has been living in exile in India since August 2024.
Mohammed Shahabuddin was sworn in as the 22nd president of Bangladesh on April 24, 2023. The oath of office was administered by then-speaker, Shirin Sharmin Choudhury. He was the nominee of the then-ruling Awami League, and was elected unopposed on February 13, 2023 as no other candidate submitted papers to contest the race.
A freedom fighter, Shahabuddin retired as a district and sessions judge in 2006. He also served as a commissioner of Anti-Corruption Commission from 2011 to 2016.
Shahabuddin was the general secretary of the Pabna Edward College unit of the Chhatra League and president of the Pabna district Chhatra League and Jubo League. He was the joint secretary of the Bangladesh Krishak Sramik Awami League’s (BaKSAL) district unit and publicity secretary of the Awami League district unit.
Shahabuddin also served on the advisory council of the Awami League, whose activities are now banned.
