Gias Uddin, a former journalist and police cadre officer who later practised as a barrister, has been appointed the prime minister’s special assistant with the rank of secretary on a contractual basis.
The government appointed him to assist Prime Minister Tarique Rahman in matters related to the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism and the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education.
The Ministry of Public Administration issued a notification regarding his appointment on Thursday.
According to the notification, Gias Uddin will hold the post from the date of his joining until the end of the prime minister’s tenure or until further orders, whichever comes earlier.
His appointment is subject to his relinquishing any other profession, business or employment with any government, semi-government or private organisation or institution.
The notification said other terms and conditions of his appointment would be determined through a contract.
Gias, who had served in the police cadre, later moved to London and qualified as a barrister. Following the fall of the Awami League government, he worked for some time as deputy managing director of East West Media Group.
