Veteran Awami League leader and former commerce minister Tofail Ahmed passed away in Dhaka this afternoon.
He breathed his last around 3:30pm at Square Hospital, his son-in-law Dr Touhiduzzaman Tuhin confirmed to The Daily Star.
The 81-year-old was admitted to the hospital with multiple age-related complications.
Tofail Ahmed had been wheelchair-bound for several years following a stroke.
Elected to the parliament in 1970 at just 27, Tofail was a prominent organiser of the Liberation War and a key leader of the Mujib Bahini.
In independent Bangladesh, he went on to serve eight terms as a member of parliament, became Mujib's political secretary with the rank of state minister, and later held cabinet portfolios three times.
He was an advisory council member of the Awami League, whose activities remain banned.
