India has appointed BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi as the next high commissioner to Bangladesh.
“He is expected to take up the assignment shortly,” said the Indian Ministry of External Affairs today.
He will succeed Pranay Verma, who has been named India’s next ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.
The appointment comes at a time when both countries are attempting to rebuild relations that had strained during the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus following the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.
Relations appear to have been improving after a new government led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman took office earlier this year.
Trivedi served as a union minister for railways and as minister of state for health and family welfare during the UPA regime, when he was a member of the Trinamool Congress.
He resigned from the TMC on February 12, 2021, and joined the BJP on March 6, 2021.
