Bangladesh on Wednesday thanked the Indian government for the recent supply of diesel and requested an increased volume of diesel and fertiliser supply to Bangladesh while the Indian side indicated that it would consider the request “readily and favourably.”
Dhaka also reiterated its request for the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal. They have been awarded the death penalty by the International Crimes Tribunal in Bangladesh.
Bangladesh thanked the Indian authorities for apprehending the suspected killers of Shaheed Osman Hadi.
Both sides agreed that the arrested individuals would be returned to Bangladesh in accordance with the procedures laid out in the extradition treaty between the two countries.
Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur Rahman raised these issues during his meetings in New Delhi. He met Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S. Jaishankar and Oil and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri.
Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir and Bangladesh High Commissioner to India Riaz Hamidullah were present at the meetings.
The Bangladesh side also held a meeting with India’s National Security Adviser Ajit Doval on Tuesday evening after arriving in New Delhi.
Although a future visit by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman to India is under discussion, neither Bangladesh nor India mentioned any specific date in their separate readouts issued on Wednesday.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has already invited Prime Minister Tarique, his wife Dr Zubaida Rahman, their daughter Barrister Zaima Rahman to pay a visit to India at a convenient time.
“A warm welcome awaits you in India,” Modi said in his recent letter handed over to PM Tarique by Speaker of the Indian Lok Sabha Om Birla who represented the government of India at the swearing-in ceremony of the newly elected government of Bangladesh.

In the discussions, both sides emphasised the importance of advancing bilateral relations between the two countries in various dimensions.  They also discussed key regional and international issues, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Dr Khalilur said the recently elected BNP Government under the leadership of Prime Minister Tarique Rahman would pursue its foreign policy in accordance with the principle of "Bangladesh First" and on the basis of mutual trust and respect and reciprocal benefit.
During the discussions, Minister Jaishankar said Indian visas to Bangladeshis, particularly medical and business visas, would be eased in the coming weeks.
Dr Khalilur expressed thanks to Minister Hardeep Puri for the recent supply of diesel to Bangladesh by India and requested to increase the volume of supply of diesel and fertilizer.
Minister Puri indicated that the Government of India will consider the request readily and favourably, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The two sides also agreed to undertake consultations on key bilateral issues.
The Indian External Affairs Minister reiterated India's desire to engage ‘constructively’ with the new government and further strengthen bilateral ties.
The two sides agreed to explore proposals for deepening the partnership through the relevant bilateral mechanisms.
Follow-on official meetings are expected to take place at an early date, said the MEA, noting that both sides exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.
"We discussed strengthening our bilateral relationship in its various facets," said Jaishankar after his meeting with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Dr Khalilur. He said they also exchanged views on regional and global developments.
"Pleased to host FM Khalilur Rahman of Bangladesh and his delegation this afternoon," Jaishankar said in a message shared on his verified X handle.

They agreed to remain in close touch.This marks the first high-level visit to India since the BNP government, led by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman, assumed office, following a period of significant strain in bilateral relations.
Bangladesh is keen to see bilateral relations return to normalcy on the basis of ‘mutual respect and mutual gains,’ as the ‘goodwill’ trip came amid increased engagement between the two countries in recent weeks.
Although Dhaka preferred to describe the trip as a ‘goodwill visit,’ officials told UNB that it involved substantive discussions with New Delhi to ‘better understand current dynamics’ and raised issues of key importance to Bangladesh.
In these meetings, Bangladesh emphasised stability and the continued development of bilateral relations based on dignity, mutual trust and respect, and shared interests.
"India and Bangladesh share warm and historic ties anchored in strong people to people relations. The visit will further bolster India Bangladesh partnership," said Indian External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal.
From New Delhi, Foreign Minister Khalilur is likely to fly to Mauritius on the same flight on Thursday morning as his Indian counterpart, Jaishankar, to attend the 9th Indian Ocean Conference.
