UN in Bangladesh marks International Women’s Day and launches social media campaign

The UN in Bangladesh has launched a social media campaign “We are all surrounded by women” to celebrate International Women’s Day and all women in Bangladesh. The campaign features over a dozen of women from different UN agencies, including the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, country representatives of UN entities, a driver, programme officers, and many more women working for the UN in Bangladesh.

For over a week, on its social media accounts on Twitter and Facebook, the UN in Bangladesh is sharing quotes of its women staff on the significance on gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls.

Over a dozen of women from different UN agencies including the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the UN Migration Agency (IOM), the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR), The UN Office for Project Services (UNOPS), the UN Population Fund (UNFPA), UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), the UN Women, the World Health Organization (WHO), and the World Food Programme (WFP) participated in the campaign.

Among the participants of the campaign are the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis, representatives of UNFPA and UN Women in Bangladesh, Kristine Blokhus and Gitanjali Singh, a driver of WFP, Shahinur Akhter, different programme and project officers, and many more women of various professions who have been working for the UN in Bangladesh.

“Today we celebrate women in all their diversity. We are all surrounded by women who inspire and empower us,” says the UN Resident Coordinator in Bangladesh, Gwyn Lewis.

“We need to further advance women’s representation and leadership in tech and innovation, and protect the rights of women and girls online and offline,” comments the UN Women Representative in Bangladesh, Gitanjali Singh.

This year the theme of International Women’s Day is “DigitAll: Innovation and technology for gender equality” which aligned with the priority theme for the upcoming 67th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women “Innovation and technological change, and education in the digital age for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls,” that is taking place from 6 to 17 March 2023.
