The Election Commission suspended the registration of Awami League today.
Akhtar Ahmed, senior secretary of the Election Commission, confirmed this to The Dhaka Diplomat.
The decision was taken at a meeting held at the EC secretariat, he said.
He also said, "As you are aware, earlier today the Ministry of Home Affairs banned the activities of the Bangladesh Awami League along with its affiliated and associate organisations. In light of that, the Election Commission has decided to suspend the Awami League's registration."
When asked on what grounds the registration was suspended, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said, "We have taken this step in continuation of the notification issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs."
Earlier today, the interim government banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations, under the Anti-Terrorism Act, until the International Crimes Tribunal completes the trial of the party and its leaders.
The NCP and other political parties and student organisations have long been rallying to ban AL, its affiliated organisations, and the deregistration of the party.
Party registration is a prerequisite to take part in national polls.
Since 2008, a total of 50 political parties have been registered with the EC, while five parties' registrations have been cancelled since.
Earlier, Freedom Party's registration was cancelled in 2009 as it failed to provide the party charter.
The Jamaat-e-Islami's registration as a political party was declared illegal by the High Court in 2013. Following the verdict, the EC cancelled Jamaat's registration in October 2018. Jamaat's appeal against the High Court verdict is now pending with the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
After 2018, Oikyabaddho Nagarik Andolan, Pragatashil Gonotantrik Party and Jatiya Gonotantrik Party lost their registrations as they failed to fulfil certain conditions.
