31 March 2026, the 55th anniversary of the Independence of Bangladesh was commemorated with dignity and respect at the Russian House in Dhaka through a series of events organized in cooperation with the Liberation War Academy Trust.
The commemorative program began with a solemn observance, including a minute of silence in honor of the martyrs of the Great Liberation War. Tribute was also paid to the Soviet Navy for its historic role in clearing mines from the ports of Chittagong and Mongla, which significantly contributed to the recovery of Bangladesh in the immediate post-war period.
In her address, Director of the Russian House in Dhaka, Alexandra A. Khlevnoy, highlighted the longstanding friendship between Bangladesh and Russia, recalling the Soviet Union’s crucial support during the Liberation War and its continued contribution to Bangladesh’s post-independence development. She also underscored the Russian House’s ongoing initiatives aimed at strengthening cooperation in education, science, and cultural exchange for the people of Bangladesh.
Speakers at the event, including Mohammad Abul Kalam Azad, along with representatives of freedom fighters from various districts, expressed deep gratitude for the Soviet Union’s assistance during the Liberation War and the reconstruction phase that followed. They reaffirmed the importance of this historical partnership in shaping Bangladesh’s journey as an independent nation.
A special reception was held to honor 20 heroic freedom fighters and two distinguished individuals in recognition of their invaluable contributions to the country. A commemorative token was presented to Ms. Khlevnoy by Dr. Abul Kalam Azad as a mark of respect for Russian martyrs.

The newly formed federation currently brings together 20 organizations from different regions of Bangladesh, aiming to further strengthen bilateral friendship and cooperation between the two nations.
