Local police have recovered the body of a young Bangladeshi-origin engineer from an apartment building in Marina del Rey, California. The deceased, Shakib Ali (32), was the son of a U.S. Awami League leader and was living alone in the apartment.
The cause of his mysterious death remains unknown, though many are speculating it may have been due to a heart attack. Shakib was the only son of Dr. Muhammad Ali Manik, a well-known physician in Georgia, Atlanta-based Awami League leader, and an official of the Federation of Bangladeshi Associations in North America (FOBANA), and Shakira Ali Bacchi.
A reliable source said Dr. Manik and his wife were in regular contact with their son. However, they had been unable to reach him for the past 3–4 days, raising concerns. On Monday morning, they went to his apartment in Marina del Rey, California, where they discovered his body and immediately informed the police. Authorities arrived at the scene, recovered the body, and sent it to a hospital for an autopsy.
Shakib Ali worked as a software engineer at Amazon and had moved to California only six months ago for his job.
Leaders and members of the U.S. Awami League, Georgia Bangladesh Society, and FOBANA have expressed deep condolences over his untimely death.
His passing has cast a shadow of grief among Bangladeshi expatriates across the United States, especially in Georgia. Georgia Bangladesh Society President Arefin Babul has reportedly already departed for Los Angeles to support the bereaved family during this difficult time.
Meanwhile, in Los Angeles, FOBANA leaders—including 40th Convention Chairperson Rabiul Karim Belal, Executive Secretary Khaled Ahmed Rouf, Vice President Mohammad Rahman Zahir, Convener Dr. Zainul Abedin, Convener Committee President Moazzem Chowdhury, Member Secretary Engineer Mohammad Iqbal, former Chairperson Attorney Mohammad Alamgir, Rehan Reza, Masud Chowdhury Rob, Jasim Uddin, Assistant Secretary Anthony Pius Gomez, and Executive Committee Treasurer Mahin Uddin Dulal—have expressed deep condolences over the death of Shakib Ali and extended their heartfelt sympathies to the bereaved family.
