Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus announced a three-day national mourning and a one-day public holiday tomorrow, the day of former prime minister Khaleda Zia's funeral prayer.
In a televised address, Yunus said the nation has lost a guardian with Khaleda Zia's passing. He described her as a profoundly eminent figure in Bangladesh's politics, whose extraordinary role in the struggle for democracy, establishment of a multi-party political culture, and advocacy for people's rights will remain indelible in history.
Her unwavering leadership against autocracy and fascism repeatedly guided the nation through undemocratic crises and inspired the spirit of liberation, Yunus said. He added that the nation will forever remember her shining contributions with reverence.
At this difficult time, Yunus urged all citizens to remain united and vigilant, emphasising the importance of responsible conduct to prevent any attempts at instability or sabotage.
