Miscreants attacked the vehicle ferrying Hasnat Abdullah, chief coordinator (South) of NCP, at the Chandana intersection in Gazipur today.
The incident took place around 7:00pm today where Hasnat sustained minor injuries.
Shaheen Khan, officer-in-charge of Bason Police Station, said Hasnat had visited Bangladesh Agricultural University in Gazipur. On his way back to Dhaka in the evening, unidentified attackers in 3-4 motorcycles tried to stop his car near the Ulka Cinema Hall in Chandana intersection.
He said they threw bricks and stones at the vehicle.
However, he quickly reached the Boardbazar area near the Islamic University of Technology (IUT). Police then escorted Hasnat towards Dhaka, he added.
GMP Deputy Commissioner Rabiul Hasan told The Daily Star that while returning to Dhaka from an event, a group of individuals on motorcycles attacked Hasnat, causing some injuries to his hand.
Meanwhile, Sarjis Alam, chief coordinator (North) of NCP, on a Facebook post wrote that 10-12 criminals attacked Hasnat's car in the Gazipur area.
"The car windows were smashed, and Hasnat's hand is bleeding. Those nearby, please protect him," his post reads.
The OC said that Hasnat was safely in Dhaka now.
Meanwhile, protesting the attack on Hasnat, Gazipur Metropolitan Chhatra Shibir organised a demonstration at Gazipur Chowrasta at 8:30pm.
The Gazipur district and metropolitan branches of the National Citizen Party called for another protest at 9:00pm.
