Rahul Gandhi, general secretary of the Indian Congress and leader of the opposition in the country's Lok Sabha, said India has concerns about extremist groups in Bangladesh and that his country shares some of those concerns.

He said this at a press conference held at the National Press Club in Washington DC on Tuesday (September 10). Press Club Secretary Poonam Sharma moderated the conference.

Noting that India has long-standing ties with the people of Bangladesh and his grandmother was deeply involved in the creation of Bangladesh, Rahul Gandhi said he was confident that the situation in Bangladesh would stabilize and that his country would be able to have a relationship with the current government or any government after that.

Responding to another question on whether the issues of Bangladesh, especially attacks on minorities, had come up in his meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill of the U.S. capital, Rahul Gandhi said yes, and the U.S. lawmakers have also told us about it. He further said, we are against any kind of violence and we want violence to stop. "It is the responsibility frankly of the Bangladesh government to stop the violence as soon as possible and it is our government's responsibility to put pressure on Bangladesh to stop the violence in that country," he added.

In the question and answer session, relations between India and various countries including China, Pakistan and Israel came up.

A large number of media workers from different countries participated in the press conference.
