Bangladesh has urged India to take immediate steps to ensure that no anti-Bangladesh activity is undertaken by any Bangladeshi national on the Indian soil.
In a statement, the foreign ministry of Bangladesh on Wednesday urged the Indian government not to permit or support any such activities in any manner and an immediate closure of the political office(s) of the "banned Bangladesh Awami League" on the Indian soil.
The foreign ministry said attention of the Bangladesh government has been drawn to the reported establishment of offices of Awami League in Delhi and Kolkata.
"Many of the senior leaders of the party, absconding in several criminal cases in Bangladesh on account of grievous crimes committed against humanity, remain in the Indian territory," it said.
Earlier, on July 21, 2025, pretending to be an NGO, some senior AL leaders planned a public outreach at the Delhi Press Club and eventually distributed booklets among the attending members of the press, the foreign ministry statement said.
To date, several reports in Indian media affirm increasing activities of the party on the Indian soil.
"Any form of political activity campaigning against the interests of Bangladesh by Bangladeshi nationals, particularly by the absconding leaders/activists of a banned political party, staying on Indian soil, legally or illegally, including the establishment of offices is an unambiguous affront against the people and State of Bangladesh," the statement said.
This development also risks upholding the good-neighbourly relations with India driven by mutual trust and respect and lends serious implications for the political transformation underway in Bangladesh, the foreign ministry said.
"This may also trigger public sentiment in Bangladesh which may in turn impact the ongoing efforts of the two countries in further enhancing the relationship between the two closest neighbours," it said.
The interim government of Bangladesh banned all activities of the Awami League and its associated and affiliated organisations on May 12 this year, on allegations of killings, genocide, crimes against humanity, and other grave offences during the July uprising until the International Crimes Tribunal completes the trial of the party's leaders.
The Election Commission also suspended Awami League's registration on the same day.
